The Bible says people can be deceived about their salvation.
Matthew 7:21-23 KJV
[21] Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
[22] Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
[23] And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Jeremiah 17:9-10 KJV
[9] The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
[10] I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
A person's heart and mind drive their conduct. Evil hearts and minds cause evil behavior. And vice versa. Examine one's conduct to determine what is in their heart and mind. They may believe they are saved, without a doubt. Yet their lives might say otherwise.
R.C. Sproul put it this way, “Many in the churches are unsaved, but ‘know’ they are saved.”
