In the Old Testament, God prohibited using images in worship.
Exodus 20:4-5A KJV
[4] Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
[5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God,
Leviticus 26:1 KJV
[1] Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.
God was explicit, revealing no one saw what He looked like, so that nobody could make images of Him.
Deuteronomy 4:15-16 KJV
[15] Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
[16] Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
In the New Testament, there is not even a physical description of Jesus. So no one can accurately visualize Jesus.
Much religious artwork and so on violate God’s desire for people to not have a mental image of Him. These things cause people to believe Jesus looked a certain way. For example, that he had long hair. Certainly that was not the case.
1 Corinthians 11:14 KJV
[14] Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
God is against using images to worship Him, because images make it seem that God is less than He really is, much less. Due to images, many people believe that Jesus was somewhat effeminate.
Romans 1:22-23 KJV
[22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
[23] And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Images, even mental images, are idols. Idols are devils.
1 Corinthians 10:14,19-20 KJV
[14] Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
[19] What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
[20] But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
Deuteronomy 32:16-18 KJV
[16] They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.
[17] They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. [18] Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.
