A few comments about biblical humility.

  1. "humility is the root of all virtues"

Humility: The Beauty of Holiness by Andrew Murray

So you must always start with humility.

  2. "We like to credit ourselves for being the captains of our own ships, and the authors of our own actions and success, yet we do not even make our hearts beat and we do not make our lungs breathe at night when we are asleep."

Informal Sayings by an Informal Logician in Closer to Consciousness: the First Strong Theory of Consciousness by Alexander Durig

    Proverbs 19:21 KJV

[21] There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.

People are deceived, believing they control most things in their lives. Yet the truth is they control almost nothing. God controls everything, and He does it together with His people. To recognize this and live accordingly is a big part of being humble.

  3. Humility is not being untruthful about yourself. For example, it is not saying you are terrible at chess, when you are the world champion.

    1 Corinthians 11:1-3 KJV

[1] Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

Paul here acknowledged he was mostly successful at following Christ, and they would do well to imitate him.

As many have said, humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. A humble person thinks more about God than about themselves.
