Two blessings from each of the Beatitudes.

Each of the Beatitudes revealed in Matthew 5 and Luke 6 involves two blessings. The

Beatitudes are conditional promises. Just meeting the condition is a blessing. Then upon meeting the condition, you get the promised blessing, the second one.

For example,

Matthew 5:4 KJV

[4] Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

It is a blessing to mourn, provided you are mourning for the right reasons.

James 4:8-9 KJV

[8] Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

[9] Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

Mourning over your sins is a blessing. Because that is the beginning of cleansing and purifying. It is the beginning of ridding yourself of specific sins, thereby increasing your well-being.

Those who mourn for the right reasons will then get the second blessing of being comforted.

Another example.

Matthew 5:6 KJV

[6] Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

When you hunger for food, especially when you are really hungry, food tastes wonderful. I once saw a man in prison eat a bacon cheeseburger who had not had one in many years. He was in ecstasy. Imagine eating only to stay alive and not enjoying it at all. This happened to the Israelites when they were eating manna year after year.

Likewise, a person could become more and more righteous and find it extremely distasteful. Hungering and thirsting cause one to get much pleasure from being righteous.
