Godly sorrow.

2 Corinthians 7:10A KJV

[10] For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of:

Godly sorrow leads to repentance. What does godly sorrow look like? What behavior does godly sorrow produce? Fortunately, God has revealed that in the next verse.

2 Corinthians 7:11 KJV

[11] For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

The context indicates that godly sorrow has to do with sinning.

2 Corinthians 7:1B KJV

[1] let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Godly sorrow causes these behaviors.

  1. Careful to never sin again. Being constantly alert to temptations, to stay far away from them. Most people do not even notice when they sin. Those who have godly sorrow are aware, and it pains them.

  2. Clearing of one’s self. Actually taking steps to become more and more obedient. Such as learning the Bible continually, in order to not sin ignorantly.

  3. Indignant at one’s self for having committed such great crimes. Sins are no longer seen as errors or minor offenses. But as what they truly are, great evil to God, who has done nothing but good and kind things for all people.

  4. Fearful of sinning. Also, fearful of the disastrous consequences that follow from sinning, all sinning, even if the consequences are not apparent or immediate.

  5. Desiring to never sin again, with an extreme, fanatical desire.

  6. Zealous regarding obedience.

Zeal

fervent or enthusiastic devotion, often extreme or fanatical in nature

Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged, 12th Edition 2014

  1. Revenge. Taking biblical disciplinary measures against those in the body of Christ, who live in unrepentant sin. (Consider 1 Corinthians 5).
